How to Find the Right Architectural Photographer for You!

Are you looking for a professional architectural photographer, but just don’t know where to start? Or, perhaps, you are using a photographer that specializes in portraits, and you don’t know the difference? If this is you, this article is for YOU!

No matter what profession you are in, educating your clients in your field is so important. Not only will they understand where you are coming from in regards to expertise, costs associated, etc, but, they will be able to better realize why they even need your services in the first place. Same goes with photographers. I dare say, even more so with photographers, but then again, I am biased.

Studio Absolute | Professional Photographer, Bend Oregon

Yesterday I had the pleasure of photographing imagery for the design and branding firm, Studio Absolute. Russ and Cheryl McIntosh are not only incredible people and good friends of mine, but they are also so talented in their field. They provide high end design solutions and branding to drive the right clients to your business.

Studio Absolute recently moved to a new location in Tumalo, Oregon and needed imagery for their marketing collateral. I photographed the exterior and interior of their new space, as well as some imagery showing the details within their space. In addition, I wanted to do something fun to showcase them around their space, so we worked with some blurred motion within an interior image of their office.

After receiving their images, Cheryl had this to say… “As a branding and design firm, every touchpoint of our business is under the microscope for its ability to reach and inspire the target market. After trusting Paula to tell several of our clients’ stories through photography, we knew she would do a great job showcasing our new studio. Distilleries in Portland | Oregon Editorial Photographer

I recently had the pleasure of working with the Oregon Business Magazine with my good friend and amazing art director, Jon Taylor Carter on a story about distilleries around Portland Oregon. Together, we toured three different distilleries, each with their own unique style and expertise. The three amazing distilleries were New Deal, Stone Barn Brandy Works, and House Spirits. Professional Headshots, Your First Impression | Professional Photographer Bend Oregon

I was recently hired by the lovely and talented Dana Ward of Lime Design to photograph her new professional headshots. In business, professional headshots are very important. They are sometimes the “first impression” when someone is looking for your service or a professional in your field. They can speak volumes about your personality, and even, the quality of your business. Of course, I am a photographer, so I may be biased as to the importance of one’s photography, but personally, I steer clear of any businessman or woman with a pixelated photo, cropped out of last year’s Hawaiian vacation. (facebook excluded)

For Dana’s headshots, we wanted to photograph her in an environmental portrait style, instead of in the studio, to add some depth and connection to her business. We chose The Loft in downtown Bend as a great location for her. She is one of Central Oregon’s premier home stagers, so having an intimate and warm atmosphere went well in defining her as a professional in her field.

Backporch Coffee’s New Digs | Commercial Photographer Bend OR

If you still haven’t been to Backporch Coffee Roasters‘ new location, I’m not sure where you’ve been… it’s beautiful. I’m calling it my second home these days, as I love to sip my latte’ while emailing, writing proposal or even blogging. I was hired to photograph images for their advertising collateral, showcasing their snazzy new spot and details such as Ruby, their new baby, the La Marzocco espresso machine. Yes, you heard me, La Marzocco to all you coffee “snobs”… oops…connoisseurs out there.

I wanted to compliment the modern interior of Backporch Coffee with a clean and simple approach to the imagery, which isn’t hard since, let’s face it, that’s pretty much what my photography leans toward anyway. I used mostly all natural lighting for their imagery and focused on clean lines and off-set composition. Here are a few of the images.

Well, if you missed the big opening of the World In Color Photographic Gallery, you still have a chance to check out the art work. Not only is it hanging the WHOLE month of October at the Dyna Art Lounge in the Pearl District of Portland, I am also featuring the work right here on my blog. (although you truly can’t understand the beauty of an acrylic print until you see it in person). The gallery is open Mon-Fri, normal business hours and is located at 300 NW 14th Avenue, Portland, OR. The gallery is inside the Dynagraphics building, so go take a peak inside!

This gallery is something that has been such a journey for me and my husband. Not only did we spend 6 months last year traveling the world, photographing our hearts out, we have really been trying to find out what the best way to share the imagery is and hopefully impact people along the way. When I was given this gallery opportunity, I knew it would be the right step in the right direction. I long for people to see these images not only as beautiful pieces of art but also as a way of appreciating other cultures and hopefully spuring on a desire to travel to all corners of the world. I feel that only then can people truly understand the need that is so evident in places like Africa and India and finally realize our place in helping. This gallery is meant to be a call to action. Whether the first step is learning more about a place, a foreign land that might put us out of our comfort zone, or a place that our heart longs to visit. The world is small. We can help one another.

Artisan Landscaping | Architectural Photographer, Oregon

Wheww… it’s been a while since I’ve blogged. I’m sure everyone has their excuses, but mine is just out of sheer, head spinning, business. The saying “When it rains, it pours” could not explain my business more in this season. I’m not complaining, but instead, feel very blessed for my clients, new and old, who have put their trust in me for their photography needs.

A new client, Artisan: Outdoor Living & Landscape, hired me to photograph a home’s landscaping project in the Highlands. Before I met Kevin, owner of Artisan, at the home (residence to remain un-named), I had no idea what to expect – accept that I knew Artisan did beautiful work. I was blown away! Streams of water flowing around the home, rock formations (made by Artisan), waterfalls spilling into the pool, outdoor kitchen and bar, fire pits, an outdoor pizza oven, the WORKS! It was a photographer’s dream!

In order to accomplish the images seen below, the right time of day was crucial. In addition, highlighting certain key elements in the frame with the technical ability of proper lighting went hand in hand with what the sun was doing. Getting the right feel and mood to showcase this project was also a factor in deciding lighting placement and intensity. All in all, the client was thrilled, which means, I’m thrilled!

The recent issue of 1859 Magazine shows the final advertisement, designed beautifully by Dawn Boone Creative, here in Bend Oregon. Keep an eye out for more landscaping design by Artisan and images by yours truly.
