Backporch Coffee’s New Digs | Commercial Photographer Bend OR

If you still haven’t been to Backporch Coffee Roasters‘ new location, I’m not sure where you’ve been… it’s beautiful. I’m calling it my second home these days, as I love to sip my latte’ while emailing, writing proposal or even blogging. I was hired to photograph images for their advertising collateral, showcasing their snazzy new spot and details such as Ruby, their new baby, the La Marzocco espresso machine. Yes, you heard me, La Marzocco to all you coffee “snobs”… oops…connoisseurs out there.

I wanted to compliment the modern interior of Backporch Coffee with a clean and simple approach to the imagery, which isn’t hard since, let’s face it, that’s pretty much what my photography leans toward anyway. I used mostly all natural lighting for their imagery and focused on clean lines and off-set composition. Here are a few of the images.

I was recently given the great opportunity to photograph fashion designer, Seth Aaron (winner of Project Runway) and the beautiful, Katya Timokhina for a fashion spread regarding the Portland fashion scene. Seth’s designs are a living example of Coco Chanel’s quote. His fashions are IDEAS, a way of LIVING, and most definitely, what is HAPPENING now!

Knight Residence | Architectural Photographer, Bend Oregon

Talk about a “picture perfect” family…. I had the lovely privilege of photographing the Knight Residence and the beautiful family that inhabits it for the Fall issue of 1859 Magazine (on shelves now). Doug and Wendy Knight gracefully remodeled their 1918 American Craftsman home in the heart of Bend’s Drake Park Historical District. “The idea was to be respectful of the architectural style of the era and to do something fresh…” Doug said in the 1859 Magazine interview. And they definitely succeeded.

In photographing this home, I needed to keep in mind what their vision was for their space. Light was a huge driving force for them in remodeling, so keeping the home bright and airy was important. They had so many personal touches as well. Wendy Knight, a brilliant interior designer, added warmth and elegance while mixing some of their family’s personal touches with things like their daughters’ artwork. Capturing those elements were equally important. Below are some of the final images. Enjoy!

Distilleries in Portland | Oregon Editorial Photographer

I recently had the pleasure of working with the Oregon Business Magazine with my good friend and amazing art director, Jon Taylor Carter on a story about distilleries around Portland Oregon. Together, we toured three different distilleries, each with their own unique style and expertise. The three amazing distilleries were New Deal, Stone Barn Brandy Works, and House Spirits. Makayla Zurn | Headshots | Professional Photographer Bend Oregon

As promised from my “Sneak Peak” post back in May, I have posted more images from my time photographing Makayla Zurn from News Channel 21, Bend Oregon for her new headshots. Makayla is not only beautiful and very photogenic, she is kind and very easy going (the absolutely perfect combination for a photographer). Keep an eye on this girl; she’s a big deal!

For her head shots, we wanted to have multiple “looks” to have variety in her portfolio. We LOVED shooting at The Oxford Hotel’s 10 Below Restaurant and Bar for the first part of her shoot. It’s sleek and classy, and gave a beautiful backdrop for Makayla’s images. Later, we went to an alley that will look quite familiar to the locals here Bend, Oregon. It’s graffiti-ed with some chalk artwork, spreading love and beauty to the brick backdrop and was a great spot for a more casual look for Makayla. The soft, natural light worked great in this spot too, showing her classic, flawless beauty quite nicely.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of photographing imagery for the design and branding firm, Studio Absolute. Russ and Cheryl McIntosh are not only incredible people and good friends of mine, but they are also so talented in their field. They provide high end design solutions and branding to drive the right clients to your business.

Studio Absolute recently moved to a new location in Tumalo, Oregon and needed imagery for their marketing collateral. I photographed the exterior and interior of their new space, as well as some imagery showing the details within their space. In addition, I wanted to do something fun to showcase them around their space, so we worked with some blurred motion within an interior image of their office.

After receiving their images, Cheryl had this to say… “As a branding and design firm, every touchpoint of our business is under the microscope for its ability to reach and inspire the target market. After trusting Paula to tell several of our clients’ stories through photography, we knew she would do a great job showcasing our new studio. She exceeded our expectations on timing and the quality of the work. We keep asking ourselves, ‘How did she do that?'” Cheryl continues…
“We have a good, quality camera and an eye for design, so we had taken a lot of our own shots of the studio. But we were blown away with Paula’s ability to make our space come alive with her creativity and lighting expertise. Recently I was asked by friend, entrepreneur and owner of Central Oregon Athlete, Josh Cordell to photograph some new headshots for him. I chose a location with soft, natural light to photograph him in with a nice background to blur out for added intrigue. Below are two of my favorites.

After recieving his images, Josh had this to say… “I couldn’t believe that I was able to meet Paula downtown and have the photos taken and on my computer that morning. I was blown away by that kind of speed and quality.”

Lenity Group | Oregon Architectural Photographer

I simply love my job. I feel incredibly blessed to feel like I’m doing exactly what I was intended to do. What’s even better than that? Amazing clients! On a recent project, I was hired by Lenity Group, a large architectural and planning firm in Salem, Oregon to photograph their office building and staff head shots for their new branding and website project.

For this shoot, I worked in collaboration with the wonderfully talented branding and design firm, Studio Absolute, to photograph images that speak to the branding and marketability of the architectural firm. Together, we had a blast working with Lenity Group and their amazing staff to ensure that their personalities and professionalism came through in each image. Trattoria Sbandati | Food Photographer, Bend Oregon

If you haven’t savored the flavors of Trattoria Sbandati in Bend, Oregon, you are missing out! Juri and Kinley Sbandati have set the bar high with their new restaurant featuring authentic Florence cuisine and wine pairings. But do not expect an “eat and run” restaurant. They have set the tone to wine and dine and enjoy the atmosphere with four courses to every dinner.

I had the great pleasure of photographing some of Juri’s beautiful dishes for their advertisements and website. It was nothing less than an enjoyable experience working hand in hand with Juri and their amazing designer Jon Taylor Carter. We really wanted to show off the textures and beautiful colors of the dishes and continue with the theme of the Italian, rustic feel. In order to accomplish this, I worked with specific lighting techniques to enhance and dramatize the food. It is really important to work with the balance of highlights brushing off the food and where the shadows fall to create the right feel. In addition, we wanted to include a bit of the low-light atmosphere in some of the images which is all about balancing the light and the connection between the restaurant and subject.
